The Redundancy Mindset

I am waiting in an upmarket cafe to meet a CDO from a well know organization to talk about how I can help them with some low-code initiatives.

As I look around the cafe I can see the smartly dressed clientele drinking coffee and eating breakfast talking about current issues before the working day begins.

As one of the recently redundant from the tech layoff, it feels like I am on the outside looking in. Similar to a Zoo but I am not sure who is on display? I am dressed in appropriate clothing, my laptop is open as I type away in an important manner, a beautiful coffee by my side waiting to be savored, and my mobile phone on the table - I am ready to take that important call or text. Probably not today but you never know.

I blend in.

An aspect of redundancy is the strong feeling of separation between myself and the rest of the working public, the people in this cafe. It is accompanied by a strong desire to be part of that group or tribe even though I know the positives and negatives of being in that group..

I do have a sneaky feeling that I would rather join this group more on my terms rather than an employer's terms. Perhaps deep down I am a natural-born contractor to have a greater say in my engagement with an organization. Or perhaps I am trying to give birth to my entrepreneurial spirit that will lift me to the heights of self-determination and the promise of IPO millions.

I smile. I go around this circle again and again.

I come back to the firmer ground, I am what I am. I do what I do. I seek a balance between the priorities of work, family, money, and life not sacrificing one aspect for another. Keep those around me safe and secure, happy and fulfilled while maintaining physical and mental health. This is my Matariki, Pleiades, or North star, it’s what guides me forward on this new journey.

It’s a relief to get back to this mindset, my redundancy mindset. - what’s yours?
